Bruce graduated MBChB from the University of Otago and became a Fellow of the Royal Australasian College of Physicians in 1979. Bruce then completed his gastroenterology training at the University of New South Wales in Sydney before returning to New Zealand as a Senior Lecturer in Medicine at the Chrischurch School of Medicine.

In 1996 he became fulltime gastroenterologist at Christchurch hospital and was appointed Clinical Director of Gastroenterology in 1999 until 2009.

Bruce has over 70 publications in refereed journals and was founding member of the Bowel and liver trust which raises funds for patient education, research and equipment.

Bruce is currently a Gastroenterologist at Christchurch Hospital and Clinical Lecturer in Medicine at the Christchurch Clinical School.
